Welcome

Join us on our journey eating through our beautiful country South Africa. We will be testing out our country's variety of foods, which are as rich and as "rainbow like" as our nation. On our way we will stop by a few cinemas and watch a movie or two (We are after all movie fanatics) and if we have the money for it, do some adventures! Where to eat, what to watch or what to do in South Africa. We will try it out for you and let you know what is best. We start our journey in Gauteng. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Restaurant: Ocean Basket Wonderboom Junction

We had Sushi and Deserts. Although their sushi is not as great as Zenbu or John Dorys, its still up there. They do have something interesting and tasty of their own, their Salmon Flowers.

We loved the deserts and would recommend the Cuppacino Cups and Baklava.

Restaurant: John Dorys Menlyn Mall

If you've visited Menlyn this December you might have realized that Zenbu is no longer there :( Which is quite a bummer cause Zenbu topped our list for best places to eat. But we have some good news. It seems as though John Dory has some of Zenbu's chefs in their kitchen as their Sushi tastes the same. So if you crave some Sushi the way Zenbu used to make it, don't despair. Just go to the exact same spot in Menlyn Mall where Zenbu used to be and order Sushi from John Dorys.

Movie: Inception (Nu Metro Menlyn)

Leonardo Dicaprio is a great actor and he once again showed his interest in the mind boggling (pardon the pun) in the movie "Inception". He didn't disappoint and the movie also didn't disappoint. At a scale of one to ten, the movie can be ranked at 8.

Just one more point: It seems as though we are waiting for service every time we go to Nu Metro at Menlyn. Is this just us or is someone else experiencing the same problem?

Anyway. A movie not to be missed.

Movie: Robin Hood

We haven't watched this kind of movie in a long time. There was great fight scenes and a lady who fought also - which was cool. The comedy scenes were great and the parties they were having in one of the villages looked like a lot of fun.

A feel good movie.

Restaurant: Delano's Continental Restaurant (Kollonade)

We found it suiting to eat at this restaurant as we had just watched a movie that plays out in Italy (Letter To Julliet).

We had the Salitimbocca, it was a very good meal. The veal had a somewhat strong vinaigrette taste but it was very tasty. The Panzerotti was the best of the mains though, the pasta had parmesan and spinach filling and it was a good combination and gave the dish a lot of different colours.

We had oysters and gave it a 50% (as two of us liked it and the other two didn't).

For dessert we had Peppermint Crisp Tart, La Veneziana, Black Cherry Cheesecake and Creme Brulee.

The dessert was quite exciting.
Everyone was sitting tensely watching what was unfolding in front of them, the ball was being toshed all over the plate, then just like when Tshabalala scored the goal everyone cheered...we broke through the chocolate shell of the La Veneziana. Then when we finished with the dessert there was a moment similar to when Mexico scored an equalizer...we received the bill -so we won't dwell on this.

Movie: Letters to Juliet

This was a really good movie. It had a great storyline.

It was a somewhat soppy, romantic story with a humorous twist. Don't worry there's no need for tissues though (but maybe that depends on how prone you are to crying). It occasionally felt a bit predictable but overall it was a good movie and we really liked it a lot.

Restaurant: Emoe Restaurant (Hartbeespoort)

We had the Emoe Breakfast, a French breakfast and samoosas.

Everything was good and the samoosas were nice, very cheesy (as in it had alot of cheese because it was cheese samoosas). The staff was very friendly and here's a guide to the toilet, when you go to the bathroom go to either "etoti" (men's) or "eteti" (women's).

Gauteng Motor Show 5-6 June 2010 (Zwartkops Raceway)

The motor show was coooool. There was something for every motorhead.

The drifting and X-cross was interesting and exciting sites to see. The images speak for themselves, but to truly appreciate the events you had to be there. So check out the weblink and make sure that you're there next time there's a motor showcase.

Movie: Prince of Persia (IMAX)

It was AWESOME!!!

Watching Prince of Persia in an IMAX cinema was definitely the right move.
Each action sequence was cool, the BIG screen made you look in every direction to make sure you don't miss anything. We think it might be one of our favourite movies this year. The movie isn't exactly the same as the game, but it does deliver a great experience. We think that whether your a fan of the game or not you'll really enjoy this movie.

And it has Jake Gyllenhaal as Dastan, enough said.

Miss this movie and you'll miss out.

Restaurant: Zenbu (Grill, Japanese) Menlyn

This is one of our favorite restaurants. They do it all and they do it well!

On the Menu: Meal: C & B, Dynamo Sushi Platter
Dessert: Blondies and Brownies, Sorbet

Everything was exquisite. The Crispy Chicken California rolls are always a winner, but so were the rest of the Dynamo Sushi platter. The meat was cooked to perfection, not dry or hard to swallow at all! The milkshakes were great. The Blondies and Brownies was for the most part our favorite dessert and the Sorbet had a surprisingly good taste, but I have to warn that the Sorbet is not for someone who doesn't like sour sweets (sour worms).

See Zenbu's ranking on our Restaurant Ranking List!

Restaurant: Nandos (Voortrekker Weg)

We've always loved to 'Eat the Chicken' at Nandos but for some reason we never tried the Nandos chicken burger until lately. This was a surprisingly good burger!

Firstly try the Nandos whole, 1/2 or 1/4 chicken, then the Pitas and then don't miss the burger and take the Potato Wedges more than twice or more.

Definitely, definitely try the Nandos deserts, especially the Hot Chocolate Pudding!

The rest of the menu is just as great, so you won't go wrong with anything you might feel like on the day!

Restaurant: Paratas Indian Cuisine

On the Menu: Bunnie Chow (Chicken), Korma Chicken, Samoosas and Bombay Crush.

The first thing that we tried was the Bombay Crush which is a kind of milkshake. It was the strangest milkshake I've ever tried, as it had different textures. The top of the drink was covered with 'hundreds and thousands', the milkshake part tasted like cooldrink and the bottom was filled with some kind of jelly pieces. Not unpleasant though.

The rest of the food was great. If only our stomachs could take more.

Movie: 9

An animated with a real story line. Even though the 'dolls' weren't human they really looked alive. You are thrown into the story from the start and captivated up to the end. Very nice.

This is a different kind of animated movie (Tim Burton is after all the producer) and we would recommend this movie to all of our friends.

Restaurant: Mimmo's (Menlyn Park)

Can't remember what we ordered, but all I can remember after eating there was that I was so bloated and uncomfortable. The texture of the mushroom was all wrong and the prawns were powder - like (didn't even bother finishing one).

On a better note, their milkshakes and hot chocolate are good....

Movie: Iron Man 2

Didn't think it was possible but Iron Man 2 was even better than Iron Man 1. Think of it this way - Iron Man 1 with more robot suits, more action and more killer characters (i.e. Black Widow).

Can't wait for the Avengers movie!

Restaurant: Panarottis (Wonderpark Shopping Centre)

Our taste buds said "That was great", but our stomachs said "You Idiot!".

Panarottis dishes are huge, but they are good. Our choices were the Tuscan Pasta Dish with Fettuccini, the Prawn Tail and Mussels Pasta Dish with Fettuccini and the San Marco Pizza.

Christie:

Although the basics of the 2 pasta are basically the same they have quite different tastes. The Prawn and Mussel dish have all you would expect of a seafood dish. Although the mussels were a bit grainy it was a really good dish. Overall all the dishes were very good.

Joey:

I loved the Tuscan Pasta Dish more than the other dishes although I was grateful for the freshness the pineapple peaces on the San Marco Pizza, which was also good yet not memorable. I didn't really enjoy the Prawn and Mussels Pasta dish as it really tasted "fish like". I'm not a big fan of mussels but the baby prawn was nice. (See our post about Braza if you're looking for some really good mussels)

Yeah, I kinda overdid it and left with a tight stomach, but it was worth it.

Erna:

I liked the Tuscan Pasta (Fettuccini) Dish, it's delicious. The prawn and mussels dish was not a bad dish, but it just does not compare to the Tuscan. The pizza, well it is pizza, was also delicious.

Thea:

All the dishes were good, but I think the Tuscan Pasta had a little too much peppers than I would have liked. The chicken on the pizza was awesome!!! I think when I ordered it I might have misread its description, because I read chilli sauce but it was sweet chilli sauce, which isn't very spicy. I missed the "sweet" :), but it was very satisfying.

When we left my stomach was saying "I'm gonna go all Alien on you now".

Overall rating: 3 out of 4

Movie: Leap Year

Relaxing in the movies. Loved the light heartedness of this movie and the characters were very likable. Loved the strange humor they used (maybe it's because us sisters are from Irish descent), although this is a fairytale like movie (how did she just give up everything in the end) I still enjoyed it.

Movie: Clash of The Titans (3D)

All the hype did not live up to expectation, but the movie wasn't that unpleasant. The lead actor Sam Worthington also made watching the movie worth it. Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief was actually more exciting than Clash of the Titans even though we didn't watch Percy in 3D.

Restaurant: Braza (Portugal, Mosambique, Brazil, Angola)

Our Choice: a Portuguese Platter with beef espatada, calamari, prawns, vegetables, fries and mussels.
Dessert Choices: Braza house special and the Speciality of the Week.

Every bite was surprisingly good. Even the mussels, which I usually don't like, was magnificent. I'd say the mussels was the best. Even the vegetables were wonderful. The dessert was right on target and I left feeling like I have just eaten something healthy even though it was dessert, mwoa.

This is a restaurant that I will definately visit again. The atmosphere was really relaxed with soft "latin" music playing and the service was good.
